They were given to both peoples as signs and seals of the grace and promises of God, which should call to mind and renew the memory of God’s great benefits, and should distinguish the faithful from all the religions in the world; lastly, which should be received spiritually by faith, and should bind the receivers to the Church, and admonish them of their duty.
The Law of God. We condemn the Anabaptists, who maintain that a Christian should not hold a civil office, that the magistrate has no right to punish any one by death, or to make war, or to demand an oath.
There are not three Gods, but three persons — consubstantial, coeternal, distinct as to person and order, yet without any inequality. It will be sufficient if we leave everything to the governance of divine providence, and we will not have to worry about anything or do anything. In the temptation in regard to predestination, than which there is scarcely any other more dangerous, we are confronted by the fact that God’s promises apply to all the faithful, for he says: Faith is assured of that which it confesses. They say, “The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive. Man is created and regenerated by faith in order to work unceasingly what is good and useful.
God may illuminate men directly by the Holy Spirit, without the external ministry; yet he has chosen the Scriptures and the preaching of the Word as the usual method of instruction. Zacchaeus the publican, whom the Lord had received back into favor, exclaims in the Gospel: Even if we have done all, we are unprofitable servants Luke xvii.

Therefore, we neither have such in our churches, nor do we teach that they should be in the churches of Christ. Moreover, as we acknowledge no other head of the Church than Christ, so we do not acknowledge every church to be the true Church which vaunts herself to be such; but we teach that the true Church is confessio in which the signs or marks of the true Church are to be found, especially the lawful and sincere preaching of the Word of God as it was delivered to us in the books of the prophets and the apostles, which all lead us unto Christ, who said in the Gospel: For, if they be false teachers, they are not to be tolerated at all.
We do not disapprove general or oecumenical councils if they are conducted, according to the apostolic example Acts xv.
This [Militant] Church was set up differently before the Law among the patriarchs; otherwise under Moses by the Law; and differently by Christ condession the Gospel. For he who instituted baptism and the Supper intended that we should receive not the outward form only, but helvetif inward blessing, that we should be truly washed from all our sins through faith, and be made partakers of Christ.
